DETROIT (WXYZ) - A 3-year-old Detroit boy was rushed to the hospital after his family says he accidentally shot himself in the foot.

The incident happened on the 20000 block of Forrer, on the city's west side, around 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

Sources say three-year-year-old Marcell Dukes found the gun and it discharged with a bullet hitting him in the foot.

Family members and Detroit police say the boy is expected to be OK, despite earlier concerns about the amount of blood the toddler lost.

It is not clear who the gun belonged to or if the weapon was registered. Police say they are unable to get a straight answer from those involved.

An uncle of the boy told 7 Action News that the boy's father just dropped Marcell at his mother's home and both the mom and dad were at the house at the time of the shooting.

The boy's uncle says he was in the shower when he heard a bang.
