An early morning fire destroyed a house on Detroit’s east side just hours after police paid a visit to the owners.

Keana Roberson says Detroit police officers came to her house late Monday night after they were told a stolen car was in her driveway. She says she explained the car belonged to her ex-husband. Roberson says police left after she showed them some paperwork.

A few hours later, around 4 a.m. on Tuesday, Keana and her 9-year old daughter woke up to the sound of shattering glass. Their house was engulfed in flames.

Roberson believes her ex-husband’s car was intentionally set on fire, and that flames quickly spread to her car and their house. Fire investigators haven’t yet determined a cause, but Detroit’s arson squad was on scene Tuesday morning.

Roberson and her four young children, all under the age of nine, made it out safely and are staying with a relative. Many of their personal items were lost in the fire.
