DETROIT (WXYZ) - "We are the testing ground," said Detroit firefighter Darrell Freeman.
He says people around the country should be watching how a federal judge handles Detroit's bankruptcy petition.
It appears some are.
During the first hearing on Wednesday a lawyer with no direct connection to the case was in the courtroom. She works at an out of state law firm and represents some municipalities.
"They are asking me about this case and what it could mean for them," she said.
During the hearing the judge ruled that the federal court will have jurisdiction over cases against Detroit while the city is in bankruptcy court.
Detroit workers and retirees were hoping a state judge would keep jurisdiction of a case invoking their pensions, because Michigan's constitution protects the pensions of public workers.
"The court missed an important opportunity to stop Governor Rick Snyder and Kevyn Orr's constitutional breach now..." Said AFSCME Council 25 Pres. Al Garrett. "But the fight does not end here."
