DETROIT (WXYZ) - We’re just hours from the huge fireworks extravaganza Monday night when the Detroit River will explode in a beautiful pyrotechnic display.

Safety is the focus of the Detroit Police Department. The cash-strapped DPD is getting a lot more backup this year from Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties.

All three counties will be helping to beef up security.

There will also be a curfew imposed this year beginning at 6 p.m. Monday night. That means anyone 17 or younger must be with a parent or guardian. Violators will be picked up by officers and parents could be ticketed.

Last year’s celebration was fairly quiet. A 14-year-old shot himself and another teen girl was hit by a bullet that ricocheted.

Sources tell Action News they have also been monitoring social media for gang activity. There have been some threats, but officers are confident their presence will deter troublemakers.
