DETROIT, Mich. (WXYZ) - Federal investigators say 29-year-old Samson Wright was offered $15,500 to set the fire that injured six Detroit firefighters.
Wright appeared in court today for a detention hearing, but his attorney says she needs more time to study the case. The hearing has been postponed until Wednesday.
In the criminal complaint, federal authorities say Wright was offered $500 to set the fire, and another $15,000 to be paid at a later date. The documents do not say who offered the money.
The fire took place at a commercial building at Jefferson and Drexel earlier this month. Four businesses were destroyed.
Investigators say Wright, along with a group of people, propped a ladder against the building and could gain access to the interior because Wright had previously loosened a bunch of bricks in the wall.
Wright says at the last moment the group of men changed their mind and left. But at some point someone came back and set the fire with gasoline. Wright says he did not set the blaze.
Investigators say the fire was started in the back room of the Metro PCS store. The ladder and an empty gas can were found nearby.
Wright will find out on Wednesday if he will remain in detention, or if he can be released on bond.
