DETROIT (WXYZ) - Skipping class or being late for school earned more than two dozen students a trip to a Detroit police station.

The Operation Safe Passage Task Force executed its first truancy sweeps for the new year, targeting the area outside of Denby High School.

The group is comprised of several agencies including Detroit Police, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, and Detroit Public Schools.

By law, truants can be ticketed or fined, but instead many were given the option to perform community service and get counseling with their families during the sweep.

Members of the OSP Task Force hope the conversations that were started at the Eastern Precinct during the sweep will prevent students from getting into serious trouble at another time.
