Detroit (WXYZ) - Volkswagen is celebrating not only the opening of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, but record sales.

The automaker announced Monday morning that it set a record, selling more than 9 million vehicles last year for the first time in company history.

Volkswagen is now third in sales in the world behind Toyota and General Motors.

7 Action News spoke to Vice President of Product Marketing and Strategy Monday morning before the show opened.  He says the company will be introducing new vehicles that will help it continue to grow in the United States.  One of them is a 3 row crossover SUV that aims to compete with the Ford Explorer and other large utility vehicles.
