DETROIT (WXYZ) - Mayor Dave Bing has a long familiarity with his new Chief of Staff.
Kirk Lewis has worked for Mr. Bing in both the public and private sector. Before both men entered government service they worked together at Bing’s company The Bing Group.
Lewis served as President and CEO of the company under Bing. He joined the company in January 1994.
Once they moved into the Mayor’s office, Lewis served as one of Bing’s top aides, working under the title of Group Executive for Corporate and Civic Affairs.
Lewis departed the Mayor’s Office in March of 2011 under a little bit of controversy. At the time it was revealed that he may have been pursuing the position as Robert Bobb’s successor as Detroit Public Schools Emergency Manager.
Those rumors were never confirmed and the position eventually went to Roy Roberts.
During a press conference at her home, ex Detroit Communications Director Karen Dumas said her responsibilities increased when Lewis left. She also said that Lewis will bring value to his new position as Chief of Staff in his support and “watching the Mayor’s back.” She also said “That’s a good move.”
Lewis also worked as a debt analyst for Ford Motor Company and as a staff accountant for Price Waterhouse.
He is a graduate of both Wayne State University and Michigan State University’s Eli Broad Graduate School of Management, as well as Detroit Country Day.
Most recently, Lewis has been working for Cornerstone Charter Schools as CEO of Charter Operations. He accepted the job in April 2011.
