DETROIT (WXYZ) - It may be just weeks away from opening, but the excitement around the first Meijer store in Detroit is building.
Officials told 7 Action News that the new Meijer, which was built in a plaza on the old state fair grounds, will employ 550 people.
Hundreds of other jobs that will be created by the entire newly built Gateway Marketplace.
Those behind the project say this is huge for the community here.
It will have a gas station and a drive thru pharmacy.
According to officials within a 3 mile radius there are close to 200,000 residents and within a 5 mile radius there are close to 500,000 residents.
Those who live in the area off of 8 mile told 7 Action News it is a big deal to have their very one supermarket.
Meijer will be the first store to open in this plaza. That will happen on July 25.
The other stores will open throughout the summer.
