Detroit (WXYZ) - Right now in Michigan, more than 3,000 people are waiting for an organ donation.
Those who are working to save their lives through education gathered at an event Thursday at Marygrove College.
One of them was the father of 23-year-old April Lucas. April was a graduate student at Central Michigan University when her family learned devastating news.
“She got up to study for exams and had a brain hemorrhage,” said her father Harry Lucas.
As his world fell apart, doctors asked, “Do you want to donate your daughter’s organs?”
“We prayed for a miracle. We got a miracle the next day when her organs saved four lives,” said Lucas.
Thoughts of four people saved by April’s death helped Lucas continue on.

Meteorologist Keenan Smith’s son was saved by organ donation. He helped host the event.
If you want to register to be an organ donor, go to the Secretary of State’s website at expressSOS.com .
As a donor, you can save up to eight lives.
