HANDY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) - The Livingston County Sheriff says a 53 year-old male motorcyclist was killed when he veered his bike into a semi along eastbound I-96 Friday morning. Investigators believe the man may have been trying to pass the semi when it happened.

The Sheriff says they have two witness statements – one person says it looked like the man on the bike was answering his cell phone just before the crash. Another witness says it appeared the man was hunched over, perhaps suffering from some kind of medical condition.

An autopsy will be conducted this weekend to determine what happened. Alcohol, however, is not believed to be a factor.

The accident shutdown all lanes of traffic on eastbound I-96 near Nicholson Road, backing up drivers for miles. Deputies were able to open a weigh station and divert one lane of traffic – eventually all lanes were reopened this afternoon.

The victim has not yet been identified.
