Motorist says Michigan State Police trooper terrorized him during hunt for I-96 shooter

BRIGHTON, Mich. (WXYZ) - A 56-year old man from Freeland, Michigan claims he was terrorized by a Michigan State Police Trooper trooper during a traffic stop October 29 near Brighton.

Kim Sachs was pulled over by a female trooper while driving his blue, 2012 Mustang on US-23 just south of I-96 near Brighton.

“She told me 'Do not move or I’m going to shoot and kill you,'" recounted Sachs.  "I thought, 'What?' I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.”

With her gun pointed directly at him, the command was repeated twice more over the next several minutes.

Sachs says the trooper never said why he was pulled over until a search of his body and vehicle was complete.

Police have increased patrols on area freeways in response to the string of 24-shootings in and around the I-96 corridor.

“I understand how series this whole matter is of catching this guy," said Sachs, "but I just don’t think it’s right to terrorize innocent motorists."

After the ordeal, Sachs called the Brighton post to complain about his treatment by the trooper. It took three days for the post commander to respond.

Sachs tells 7 Action News he'd like an explanation if Michigan State Police policy was followed during the incident.

“I’m not suing anybody, I’m not looking for money," Sachs said. " If she needs to be reprimanded for it then reprimand her, but just do what is appropriate here, Maybe they could apologize for overreacting and treating me that way, I don’t know, I’m not looking for anything more than that."

Shannon Banner, a state police spokeswoman, told 7 Action News an internal investigation is now underway.  Sachs met with an investigator Monday afternoon to tell his side of the story.
