MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich., (WXYZ) - A Macomb County official who makes a six figure salary is asking for a pay hike.
This is the second time in recent weeks that Macomb County Public Works Commissioner Anthony Marrocco is asking for an increase in his salary. Marrocco, who brings in a salary of $111,800, is asking for a $24,000 raise.
It is a controversial move that is frustrating residents who have suffered through budget cuts over the years.
“I feel like it’s irresponsible. I mean there are people suffering everywhere. There is no need for him to be greedy and ask for more money,” said Joshua Brown, a Macomb County resident.
“They should forego their raises like everywhere else. Everyone’s taking cuts and paying more taxes,” said Jeff Valken, a Macomb County Resident.
“The only thing I’m hearing is tax, tax, tax, tax. And I’m not making any more money where I can afford tax, tax, tax,” said J.C., a Macomb County Resident.
Macomb County Commissioners have struggled to keep their county out of the red in recent years just like everyone else.
The tough economy meant that public safety jobs have been threatened in recent years, county services have been cut, and local unions like AFSCME 411 have made concessions and have not had a raise since 2007.
Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel has been publicly opposed to Marrocco’s request and even blasted county commissioners for considering it.
Marrocco requested the pay hike to compensate for a larger workload and for taking on more duties. It is the second time he has asked for the controversial pay raise in the recent weeks.
Commissioners plan to look into it after discussing ordinances for paying public officials.
7 Action News made several phone calls and a visited his office today, but we were told that Marrocco would not be available for an interview.
