CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) - Police are back out searching for 23-year-old Jonathan Elbers, the man accused of trying to tie up and kidnap his ex-girlfriend from her home in Chesterfield Township.
Poilce say the 20-year-old woman was communicating with her current boyfriend when she told him there was someone at her door. The current boyfriend, who lives out of state, was apparently fully aware of the troublesome past between her and her ex. When he didn't hear from her, he called his mother.
According to police, the mother-- who lives in Georgia-- called police in Chesterfield and asked them to go check on her.
At the same time, family members of the 20-year-old who were in Florida asked her sister to go check on her at the victim's home on Nicolette, because they were also worried after not being able to get in touch with her.
Police say the sister of the victim and officers arrived at the same time and she led them into the home.
According to police, officers went inside the darkened home and called out the victim's name. They heard the victim screaming "help me" from the basement.
When Elbers was distracted when he heard police, the victim told police she was able to strike him in the head with a porcelain chicken.
Officers went to the basement stairway and found her partially stuffed inside a Christmas tree bag. The suspect struggled with officers and broke free.
The victim told officers that Elbers showed up at her house upset about their recent break-up.
“If there’s a bright side the officers got there before it turned severely tragic,” said Detective Sergeant Deron Myers.
The victim says Elbers forced her into the basement and tried to tie her up and put her in a large Christmas tree bag. The victim says he threatened to put her in his truck and shoot her in the head and then shoot himself.
Jonathan Elbers is on the loose and is considered "extremely dangerous."
“We would consider him very dangerous and unpredictable at this point. We know he is injured. We don’t know if he has any other sort of weapon. We would advise anyone who comes in contact with him to use extreme caution,” Detective Sergeant Myers.
Officers later found the suspect's vehicle parked near the victim's home. There was a rifle and duct tape in the front seat.
The victim’s parents have been alerted. A neighbor told 7 Action News they are traveling back to Michigan from Florida.
“They said [the victim] was shaken up and she is staying with some friends,” said neighbor Cyndi Gagleard.
Elbers if facing the following charges:
--Assault with Intent to Murder (Life felony)
--Home Invasion 1 st Degree (20 year felony)
--Unlawful Imprisonment (15 year felony)
--Assaulting Officer Causing Injury (4 year felony)
