MT. CLEMENS Mich. (WXYZ) - On Saturday hundreds of people came together to walk and run in honor of Tara Grant.

Her son Ian and daughter  Lindsey stood before many of them after the event to hand out awards with their mom’s sister Alicia Standerfer.

“They look forward to it every year,” said Standerfer. “They really do. This is the first year that Lindsey ran it.  She won a medal.”

The children smiled, spoke to those at the event, and made jokes, but were at the event with a purpose.

“They do it to remember Tara as well as to help other people.”

Right now their father Stephen Grant is in prison serving a 50 to 80 year sentence for killing their mom.

The  search for Tara Grant started on Valentine’s Day in 2007, when her husband Stephen reported her missing.

It would be March before police would find her body parts scattered in her home and at Stony Creek Metro Park.  Her husband was eventually found guilty of killing and dismembering her.

Money raised by the event will help Turning Point.  It is an organization that helps victims of domestic violence in Macomb County. It is celebrating a grant through Talmer Bank that will help the organization build a new emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence.

“I think as a family that we just hope that people who are in situations of domestic violence find the courage to walk away before this happens to them,” said Standerfer.
