ROMEO, Mich. (WXYZ) - Charged with felony murder, his life hanging in the balance, a 26-year-old Washington Township man stood before a judge in connection with the death of a 2-year-old.
Little Damien Sutton died after fighting nearly a week to stay alive and prosecutors say Ronald Dimambro is responsible.
It's hard to know what someone is thinking, especially someone charged with felony murder, but as Dimambro stood before a judge his life hanging in the balance, you have to wonder if he realizes the it the gravity of the situation.
This sad story dates back to Wednesday, August 21st. Damian's mother went to work, leaving her little boy with her boyfriend - Ronald Dimambro.
What happened between the time she left and around 5 o'clock is now a matter for the courts to decide, but at 5:21 the Macomb County Sheriff's Department received that fateful 911 call.
Damian was rushed to Henry Ford Hospital in Clinton Township, where he was evaluated and then transferred to Children's Hospital in Detroit. That’s where the determination was made that Damian suffered from severe head trauma - trauma consistent with "Shaken Baby Syndrome."
The days that followed would be heart wrenching for those who loved Damian. At one point a portion of his skull had to be removed to relieve pressure on his swelling brain.
For a while it seemed as though Damian might win the fight of his young life - but it was not to be.
The very day Dimambro was to be arraigned for first degree child abuse, 2-year-old Damian died and the charges against Dimambro were upgraded to felony murder.
This morning Judge Dennis LeDuc determined there was indeed enough evidence to try Dimambro for the murder of Damian Sutton.
