NEW BALTIMORE, Mich. (WXYZ) - A mom and dad are being investigated after their 2-year-old girl went wandering in the pouring rain, and wearing nothing but a dirty diaper.
She was found on the side of 23 Mile Road in New Baltimore, a couple of blocks from home.
"She's extremely smart," the girl's mother told Action News. The mother did not want to be identified. "I guess she wanted to go outside and play and she didn't tell us."
The mother says she had no idea her child had disappeared until police showed up with the little girl in tow.
"We were upstairs and she was downstairs and we have a newborn baby and we were taking care of him and she undid the lock and walked out," the mom says.
The little girl ended up across the street from Headlines Salon.
"Two of the girls were doing hair and we happened to look out the window and across the street we saw a little girl," says salon stylist Lori Arnold. "She didn't have anything on but a diaper...she was standing right by the edge of the street and it was pouring rain."
Arnold says two of her co-workers ran outside to stop traffic and rescue the child before she tried to cross the street. They brought the girl to the salon.
"We put some towels on her and dried her off," says Arnold. "Her diaper was totally soaked, she was drenched."
Officers recognized the girl from previous visits to the family’s house, and took her back home, according to New Baltimore's Police Chief Tim Wiley.
Child Protective Services is investigating, and the parents could face neglect or abuse charges.
The family says the child has not been removed from the home. They say they have now installed a sliding lock near the top of the door that the little girl cannot reach.
The mother says she plans to thank the salon workers in person.
"I'm very grateful," she said.
