WARREN, Mich. - A family business that has stood in Warren for nearly 90 years was significantly damaged by fire Sunday morning.

Firefighters from the Warren Fire Department put out a large fire at Young's Garden Mart on Ryan Rd. near Martin Rd.

Bev Harenski, the owners’ daughter, was working alone inside the building around 8:00a.m. Shortly afterward she smelled fire and heard crackling. Harenski ran to her mother’s house nearby and called 9-1-1.

Crews were able to keep the fire from spreading to the business’ warehouse area, which would’ve been extremely dangerous since fertilizer was stored there. The northeast portion of the building, which housed the retail center, is a complete loss.

Tragedy is no stranger to the family. Just a week ago, Bev’s sister, Cindy Roback, buried her son. The day he was found dead, Cindy’s mother-in-law suffered from a massive heart attack.

The family says they’re staying strong together, but are asking for prayers.

Fire investigators have not determined a cause, but don’t believe foul play is involved.
