CHESTERFIELD, Mich. (WXYZ) - How would you like to hire a wife for the day?  A woman from Macomb County has the answer for you.

Evelyn McKenzie, a wife from Chesterfield, sounds a little too good to be true.

“I love to cook, I love to bake, I love to sew,” said McKenzie.  Her husband Rick doesn’t mind sharing her with others, but in name only with her business called “Hire a Wife”.

“When we were out in the corporate world, we’d hear women say all the time, I need a wife,” she said.

The 57-year-old started the service when she lost her job in the banking industry three years ago.

“We’ll do a meal for you, we will go grocery shopping for you, take to the doctor’s office if you need to go,” said McKenzie.   When a new homeowner called the wives to help clean-up out back, they found more than just an old building.

The building happens to be the second Smiths Creek Depot off the Grand Trunk Western railroad line. The first went to Greenfield Village.

When passenger service stopped along the line in the 1950s the train company moved the depot from Port Huron to Richmond Township in the 1970s where it became an antique store.

Now McKenzie is helping the homeowner flip the building it into a private art studio.  While she likes being her own boss, McKenzie will not boss you around.  But she will do anything that your own wife won’t do.

“Oh, no, no, no, no,” said McKenzie.  Well, just about anything.  You will not find her in your bedroom unless there is some cleaning to do.

“I’m very happily married and so are my ladies so they aren’t doing anything else,” said McKenzie.
