HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) - Officials have determined that the man who caused the evacuation of Harrison Township's L'Anse Creuse High School is a former student who was at the school to pick up a letter of recommendation.

The man was dressed in camouflage because he works at nearby Selfridge Air National Guard Base. He was also wearing a holster, but he was not armed.

The man was seen entering and leaving the school by a staff member at around 6:00 am. He had been told that he would have to return later to pick up his letter.

However, a miscommunication led to police being called.

Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham says the man was confronted by a janitor while inside the school and told he would have to come back. But as the janitor relayed the story to a co-worker, the decision was made to contact police. The airman was questioned by police and released.

Both the Macomb County Sheriff's Department and Michigan State Police were called to the scene. 7 Action News is being told that the situation is secure and the school was searched.

School has been closed for the day.
