SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) - A major water main break in Shelby Township Tuesday has shut down 24 Mile Road, between Schoenherr and Jewel.
Shelby Township Police report that a broken 36" water main line is to blame for the mess. A boil water alert is in effect until further notice for Shelby Township, Rochester and Lenox Township.
Tim Orbacki was driving on 24 Mile when the ground below his Jeep began to shake. "I felt the road starting to vibrate and I couldn’t figure out what was going on. I looked to my left and I started to see water coming out of the ground, shooting up like a geyser."
Chris Strahan sent in viewer video that shows the water gushing onto the road. You can view the video in the video player located at the top left.
The water main break caused flooding on 24 Mile Road and on area side streets, but much of the water began to recede after the water was shut off.
Once the leak was contained, crews began immediate work to determine the cause and fix the problem, "The biggest feeder is the 36" pipe and that’s what exploded. That’s what needs to get contained and fixed as soon as possible," said Rick Stathakis, Township Supervisor.
Stathakis said crews planned to have water pressure back to normal no later than Thursday. Until then, all residents of Shelby Township are under a boil advisory
