WARREN, Mich. (WXYZ) - A Warren police officer is expected to be okay after being shot overnight.

The officer was responding to a 911 call about a man with a gun to the head of a resident at a home at Memphis and Paige at the time of the shooting.

Several officers were dispatched to the scene. Police say that when they arrived on the scene the man came out of the house on Paige Street and fired two rounds at the officers.

One of the shots hit a 35-year-old officer in the abdomen. The bullet was stopped by the officer's bullet proof vest. He is described as an eight year veteran of the Warren Police Department.

Officers returned fire, killing the man. He is described as a 53-year-old Downriver man.

The scene is near 9 Mile and Van Dyke.

The officer is currently listed in stable condition at a local hospital. He was given a CAT scan to check for internal bleeding and is being admitted for observation.

Officers are still interviewing witnesses, including a 21-year-old Downriver woman who was seen running from the home when police arrived on the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.
