11-year-old boy dies after Chesterfield Township crash

CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich., (WXYZ) - Investigators say an 11-year-old boy has died after a mom driving her five kids to school ran a red light going southbound on 26 Mile around 7:30 a.m . Friday.

The Chesterfield Township Police report 11-year-old Kyle Halcomb died Sunday evening from injuries sustained in the crash. He was sitting in the passenger seat.

According to police a 35-year old mother from Casco Township in St. Clair County, ran the red light going southbound on County Line Rd. at 26 Mile around 7:30 a.m. Friday. Her van was first struck by a westbound vehicle, and then immediately after hit by an eastbound vehicle.

Chesterfield Township Police are withholding the identities of the victims, but they say the mom was dropping off her 8 and 10-year-old daughters to Maconce Elementary. She was also taking her 11-year old son, 12-year old daughter and another 13-year old son to Anchor Bay Middle School North.

The mother did not appear to have life-threatening injuries, but her children were seriously injured at taken to Mt. Clemens Regional Hospital. They were later transported to Children’s hospital in Detroit.

Witnesses tell Chesterfield Township Police the cars that struck the van had the right of way with a solid green light. Some witnesses questioned if the traffic signal was functioning properly at the time, but Chesterfield Township Police believe they were working correctly.

Police say the family was on the way to school after the children missed the bus. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor, and investigators don't believe the driver was distracted using a cell phone while driving.

Anchor Bay School District officials declined to comment on how they're helping students cope with the tragedy, but say a crisis team is available.
