WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) - To investigators this case is odd from the beginning: a man was sitting in a parking lot of the St. John Pharmacy in Washington Township for a half hour Thursday morning.
Eventually, according to police, he walked through a couple of businesses and entered the pharmacy. Once inside, he waited a while and then picked his victim, a 57-year-old woman.
Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham told 7 Action News he grabbed her around the neck and pointed a knife at her stomach. Then he demanded the pharmacist hand over Vicodin.
The Macomb County Sheriff’s Department was able to get pictures of the suspect from nearby surveillance video.
“The pharmacist then complied,” said Sheiriff Wickersham. “Gave them an undisclosed amount of Vicodin and he left. We were then able to capture him walking back through the same two business parking lots, getting into what we believe to be a either gold or tan older model Ford Explorer.
Some loved ones of a worker at the pharmacy, which is located inside a medical building off Van Dyke, were terrified.
Amanda Hurst said she was worried about her boyfriend’s mother who was inside when the incident happened.’
“It’s just pretty crazy with everything happening,” said Hurst. “It’s just such a small town you really don’t expect that to happen let alone his mom working here and everything. To get a phone call or text and it just kind of freaks you out, you know. So close to home and everything.”
St. John Providence Health System has released a statement.
We’re very happy no one was hurt. The pharmacy staff did a great job in handling the situation. We are cooperating with the investigation.
Police are still searching for the thief.
“This isn’t your typical, you know usually they kind of run in, get what they need and run out. So, what's going on with this individual? We’re not really going to find out until we get him in custody,” said Sheriff Wickersham.
Investigators are asking for help in this case. If you know anything about what took place or if this suspect looks familiar to you you’re asked to call the Macomb County Sheriff’s Department at (586) 307 – 9358.
