DETROIT (WXYZ) - U.S. prosecutors are expected to file a brief in federal court Monday, asking for an increased bond for Dr. Farid Fata.
The oncologist and hematologist is accused of intentionally misdiagnosing patients to run costly tests and treatments. The prosecution says Fata used his practice to run up a $35-million Medicare in just two years.
The cancer doctor runs Michigan Hematology Oncology, which has several locations around Metro Detroit.
Last week a federal magistrate judge set Fata's bond at $170,000. If posted, he would not be allowed to have contact with staff or patients, and also would be tethered to his home. Fata's attorney, however, has asked for a lower and less restrictive bond -- arguing his client is not a threat to the community. Prosecutors disagree, saying Fata's vast amount of financial resources make him a flight risk. On Monday, they are expected to file a brief detailing how much they would like a federal judge to increase the bond.
Fata remains in the Wayne County Jail until at least Tuesday morning when a higher judge will determine the amount of the bond.
Former patients, who allege the cancer doctor ruined their lives, say there is no amount high enough. "He's more interested in the dollars than your life," said Robert Rabideau.
Rabideau says Fata unnecessarily treated him with chemotherapy for a rare form of cancer when other doctors said the treatment would offer no benefit. Instead of improving his health, Rabideau says his life has been destroyed. "Unfortunately here I am now. I'm almost a vegetable."
