(WXYZ) - Shelby Township is fighting to get chemical contamination at an abandoned Ford Visteon plant site cleaned up before it spreads to neighborhoods.
This is contamination the 7 Action News Investigators exposed last year.
The former plant at 23 Mile and Mound Road in Shelby Township is contaminated with TCE, a chemical known to cause cancer in humans.
The township just received the results of a study that found the chemical is moving into groundwater in the area, and the contamination is worse than many thought.
“We want it cleaned up, and we want it cleaned up now,” said Shelby Township Superviser Richard Stathakis.
He says there have been no reports of clusters of health problems in the area, but the township wants to be proactive. It is involved in a lawsuit that aims to get it cleaned up.
Shelby Township is holding a town hall meeting at its municipal building to address the situation on Wednesday night at 7p.m.
It will also be broadcast on community television. Experts who studied the contamination for the township will be available to answer resident’s questions.
Ford released a statement this evening saying, “Ford is continuing to conduct an extensive investigation on the property, and are working with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to determine what actions, if any, need to be taken. We have kept local residents apprised of our activities, and will continue to do so as the process develops. We take this issue seriously and remain committed to doing what is right for the community and the environment.”
