MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. (WXYZ) - East and westbound lanes of I-696 near Dequindre are now open after two accidents snarled traffic for hours Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
Eastbound lanes reopened around 12:45 a.m. Thursday. Westbound lanes reopened just before 1:30 a.m. Thursday.
Police say the first accident occurred on the eastbound side of the freeway. That accident involved two vehicles and sent wreckage all over the eastbound lanes.
The westbound accident happened about an hour later and involved a car that rolled down the embankment. Police believe that car was then struck by three or four other vehicles. Westbound traffic is being diverted off at Ryan road.
While the extent of the injuries is currently unclear, police say that several people have been hurt.
