HIGHLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) - A 12-year-old girl accused of trying to rob a store in Highland Township is being held in juvenile detention.

According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department the girl went into the Country Lake Market on Milford Road just north of M-59 Friday night with a loaded gun.

A recording of 911 phone call shows that store employees were shocked by the young age of the accused robber.

Neighbors tell Action News the young suspect was home-schooled until this year when she entered Highland Middle School as a sixth-grade student.

Huron Valley Schools confirms she is new to the district.

Once inside the store she confronted one of the staff who also co-owns the market. Wearing a bandanna over her face she demanded money. The female employee recognized the young robber and the three clerks inside were able to wrestle the gun away from the 12 year-old.

After disarming the would-be thief, the store staff held her until police arrived.

Sheriff’s deputies say the 9mm handgun was loaded.

Investigators tell Action News the girl stole the gun from a neighbor who was not at home when the weapon was taken. The young suspect apparently knew where the gun was kept and had a key to the neighbor’s home.
