ROYAL OAK, Mich (WXYZ) - Dale Vigliarolo is being called a hero for his actions in the parking lot of Holiday Market in Royal Oak.

However, he says he just pointed his gun and yelled "drop that knife now" to the man who was running around the parking lot.

Dale and his wife were heading into the store to get groceries when they saw what was going on.

He says he knew he had to take action. That's why he pulled out his 38 special, which he has a permit to carry.

Dale had to yell a few times but the man, 43-year-old David Shuten of Madison Heights, finally did toss away the 7 inch hunting knife. He then sat on the ground until police came and arrested him.

Dale's wife Karin had called 911.

Dale says he was worried while this was going on that the man would hurt someone or that he would be forced to shoot.

Police and others are calling Dale a hero because there is no telling what could have happened.

Dale's wife says she is so proud of her husband and that he did the right thing.

"What if we had gone in the store 5 minutes before, who knows," she says.

Shuten is in the Oakland County Jail on a $10,000 bond.

Dale is expected to be recognized for his bravery by the city.
