ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WXYZ) - The Detroit Zoo was recently named the finest meeting site in the state of Michigan.

The Meeting Professionals International of Michigan recognized the zoo as the ultimate place to meet at an awards ceremony on June 12 in Ann Arbor.

Zoo officials say they put great effort into more than just the zoo’s natural scenery filled with wild and amazing animals around the world.

“We take great pride in offering the community unique and exotic meeting venues which are perfect for all kinds of special events,” said Detroit Zoological Society Executive Director Ron Kagan.

The most popular meeting locations around the park include the Wildlife Interpretive Gallery for weddings and the Ford Education Center for meetings and social events.

The Wildlife Interpretive Gallery hosts almost 50 weddings annually - providing 140 seats for reception with a lush Butterfly Garden theme. The Ford Education Center is a collection of studios with four diverse themes for meetings and events.

The zoo also provides a polar bear exhibit, an amphibian village, picnic sites, and a new Events Pavilion with a capacity of 540 available for public events.

The Detroit Zoo encompasses 125 acres of naturalistic habitats located at the intersection of 10 Mile Road and Woodward Ave. in Royal Oak, Mich.

The park is open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. now through Labor Day, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the fall, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the winter months
