Greyhound passengers call 7 Action News when they're told there are not enough seats on the bus

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WXYZ) - Dozens of passengers and their relatives say 7 Action News helped them get where they were going after problems with Greyhound left them wondering how they were going to get out of the Southfield Transportation Center on the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

They were trying to get back home or back to school in cities like Grand Rapids, Lansing and Jackson after spending the holiday in the Detroit area.

The passengers say the problems began when the 12:40 p.m. bus pulled into the station and they were told that there were only 12 seats available on the bus.

People 7 Action News talked to told us that at least 40 people were waiting with tickets for the bus. They say they were "extremely frustrated" by the situation.

The passengers told us that after the bus departed Greyhound workers told them they would have to wait for buses later in the day, or even tomorrow, in order to complete their trip.  

However, the passengers also said that they were frustrated with Greyhound's customers service, saying workers would not give them refunds or could not guarantee them seats on the later buses.

The passengers said they could not believe Greyhound did not plan for higher ridership on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, a day that is traditionally one of the busiest travel days of the year.

The situation left many people scrambling to find other ways to get to their destinations, while others who could not make other plans were forced to wait and see if they could get on the later buses.

However, as 7 Action News was talking to the passengers and their relatives, an empty bus pulled up to the station.

One woman, whose relative was a passenger on the bus, told us that about 15 minutes after our camera showed up a Greyhound employee came out and told them that the bus would be coming.

The passengers were able to get on the empty bus and continue on to their destinations.

Greyhound has not officially commented on the situation.
