ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WXYZ) - Hundreds of people walked in the rain Saturday to support the Rainbow Connection and dreams for Michigan children with life-threatening illnesses.
The annual "Walk For Kids" at the Detroit Zoo was one of six walks held across the state this year. They raised $350,000 according to Mary Grace McCarter, executive director of Rainbow Connection.
Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson cut the ceremonial ribbon at the start of the walk, which took place in a steady rain. Patterson founded the organization more than 30 years ago.
Kim Peirick makes the trip to Michigan from her home in Munster, Indiana each year. She walks in support of the family of Maddie Opperman, who lost her battle with cancer on August 12, 2009.
"The Rainbow Connection mea ns a ton to all the children that are sick," said Peirick. "Families are taking care of their children. They don't have time to think about making memories and having a lot of fun and Rainbow Connection does that."
Maddie and her family were able to travel to Disney World to fulfill her dream wish.
