Police: L. Brooks Patterson did not wear seat belt, remains hospitalized after Friday accident

PONTIAC, Mich. (WXYZ) - Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson remains at McLaren Oakland Hospital in Pontiac as a result of a car accident on Friday.

He is still recovering after his second surgery. It is not known how long he will remain hospitalized.

Sources tell 7 Action News the second surgery was to "correct orthopedic injuries" sustained in the crash.

Doctors say the surgery went well.

The accident happened on Friday at Opdyke and Walton in Auburn Hills. Police tell 7 Action News the investigation into what happened is ongoing, however it appears the driver of the other vehicle was at fault.

That driver turned left then collided with the car Patterson was in. He suffered a head gash and numerous broken bones, with injuries to his hip, wrist, and legs.

His driver is in serious condition. His family has asked that his condition be kept private at this time.

The two people in the other car involved in the crash were also taken to the hospital, one with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Police indicate in their preliminary findings that the driver of the Volkswagen and both occupants of the Chrysler 300 were not wearing seat belts.

Michigan's Sealt Belt law requires all passengers ages 8-15 to buckle up in all seating positions. All drivers and passengers in the front seat are also required to wear their seat belt.

While Patterson is recovering, Chief Deputy County Executive Gerald Poisson will be handling his duties.

He and others working at the Oakland County Executive Office building on Monday say a team and plan is in place to make sure all county business is addressed.

Right now they are working to complete a budget plan, which is supposed to be wrapped up at a meeting on Thursday. They say because Oakland County operates with a 3-year budget plan there is no risk of any interruption in services.
