LAKE ORION, Mich. (WXYZ) - One local dog is surely thanking his owners today after a rattlesnake bite and an emergency trip to the vet.
Dexter is a 5-year-old male English Setter. He was walking in the woods at Lake Orion's Bald Mountain State Recreation Area Thursday afternoon when an Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake struck.
The snake bit Dexter on his chin at about 3:40 p.m. His owners rushed him to their family veterinarian who immediately treated him with Benadryl and cortisone injections.
Dexter then needed to be taken to Oakland Veterinary Referral Services in Bloomfield Hills for special anti-venom treatments. Veterinarians there say he is still hospitalized but is responding well to his treatment.
They say it is common for dogs to be bitten on their face, simply because they sniff their surroundings when they are curious.
