(WXYZ) - Opening statements are expected today in the murder trial of an 80-year-old woman from Royal Oak.

Alan Wood is charged with first-degree murder for the 2011 death of Nancy Dailey. Investigators say the 49-year-old and his girlfriend, Tonia Watson, brutally beat Dailey then slit her throat.

Wood faces life in prison if convicted. Watson cut a plea deal and won't be sentenced until Wood's trial is over.
