New distracted driving law is now in effect in Troy

TROY, Mich. (WXYZ) - With the beginning of the new year, the City of Troy's Distracted Driving Ordinance is now in full effect.

This means that Troy police can and will pull over drivers who are not paying full attention to what they are doing while behind the wheel.

The ordinance classifies three types of distracted driving. The first type applies to behaviors prohibited under Michigan's law that bans texting while driving.

The second type of behavior, banned under the ordinance is the use of cell phones to place or receive calls or check voice mail. This does not apply to anyone who is reporting an emergency, a crime or a situation where someone's personal safety is in jeopardy.

The third type of behavior prohibits any other activity that can distract a driver and affect their ability to safely operate the vehicle. Activities under this classification include, but are not limited to, eating, grooming, reading, writing, or any other activity that prevents someone from having control of the vehicle with at least one hand on the wheel.
