FERNDALE, Mich. (WXYZ) - A plaque has been unveiled in the heart of Ferndale marking one of the ugliest crimes in the metro area's history - the murder of Vincent Chin. The plaque also honors the changes made because of that crime.

In 1982, two laid off auto workers chased down Vincent Chin and beat him to death with a baseball bat - blaming Chin for problems in the auto industry. Ronald Ebens and his step-son Michael Nitz were convicted of manslaughter, but the judge only gave them probation.

The Asian community was so outraged that they banded together to make sure the killers were held accountable. Ebens and Nitz were eventually found liable in civil court for causing Chin's death.

Ferndale was selected as the location for the plaque because Chin used to work there and because that is where the Asian community rallied together to effect change.
