WIXOM, Mich. (WXYZ) - Police now say they have now linked together 22 random shootings that have occurred along I-96.
They have also released a sketch of a person they believe to be responsible for the shootings in several communities near I-96.
Officers are also searching for either a 1998 Oldsmobile Alero or a 1998 Toyota Camry in connection with the shootings.
The shootings began October 16. So far nobody has been hurt, but there seem to have been some close calls.
Schools in Wixom are taking extra precautions to keep students safe. Schools are on partial lockdown, keeping students indoors at all times.
A multi-jurisdictional task force has been formed to investigate the incidents. It includes law enforcement representatives from Wixom and Walled Lake, the Livingston, Oakland and Ingham county sheriffs' offices and Michigan State Police, as well as the Detroit & Southeast Michigan Information & Intelligence Center and the Michigan Intelligence Operations Center.
Two extra Michigan State Police vehicles were on the roads in Wixom on Saturday. 7 Action News spoke to a man who saw one of the extra officers. He says he made sure to alert the trooper to what he called a suspicious car.
“It was picking up more and more speed and it just turned off, and by the time I caught up to the street the car was gone.”
He saw the vehicle driving erratically Friday and thought about the safety of his 16-month old daughter and girlfriend.
“They’re my world so I don’t want anything to happen to them,” said the man.
Police believe the shooter has a semi-automatic handgun and is driving a dark colored vehicle, possibly with blue headlights and a stripe down the side.
So far the shooter has been traveling through several counties along the I-96 highway and firing at random at vehicles and one man, taking out the garbage.
“I can take care of myself, but when it comes to bullets...that really gets you thinking because that’s something all together,” said Vincent Prszmont.
He said people are scared but are trying to not let it paralyze them and keep them from going about their daily activities. He has been keeping an eye out at intersections for the shooter and has warned his young son to be careful when he is outside.
So far the shootings have happened in Oakland, Livingston, and Ingham counties. The shootings began around 7:00 p.m. on October 16. The last shooting happened Thursday night near Lansing.
