FERNDALE, Mich. (WXYZ) - A babysitter accused of leading police on a chase in a stolen car faced a judge today.
According to police, Vilary Reed, from Detroit, crashed that car and ran from them with a 21-month-old baby boy in his arms.
The baby is just fine and was not hurt at all.
This happened at Pennington and Pembroke in Detroit. You can see the tire tracks left in the grass after the stolen car spun out.
That’s when he took off with the baby.
It all started when Ferndale police pulled over the suspect for driving a stolen car.
But just 10 seconds after the stop, he ignored their commands and sped off.
Police say the suspect raced through neighborhoods at 75 miles an hour but once he got to Pennington and Pembroke, the car spun out and he bailed with the baby.
During the chase the man gave the baby to John Abner's wife as she was just standing in her front yard.
"He handed her the baby. The baby was crying. He just told her to hide me! hide me!", says Abner.
It wasn't long before the cops caught him.
The boy is the son of the suspect's live-in girlfriend. He's now back with his mother and Child Protective Services is investigating.
At the time of his arrest he was already on parole. According to police he has a criminal history that includes receiving and concealing stolen property and police say this isn’t the first car he has stolen.
Reed is locked up at the Oakland County jail on $25,000 bond.
