(WXYZ) - Several school districts from the Metro Detroit area were honored at the White House for their commitment to healthier lunch meals.

Birmingham, Troy, Waterford and Plymouth-Canton school districts sent delegates to the ceremony on the South Lawn that was hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama.

They were among more than 1,200 other schools from across the country that doubled their participation numbers for the HealthierUS School Challenge.

Mrs. Obama called the school leaders the “unsung heroes” who are trying to do more with tighter budgets.

The challenge encourages districts to use creative methods to improve nutrition and physical education for students.
