SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WXYZ) - Investigators are trying to determine who abandoned a puppy in a Southfield dumpster.

A man walking by found the dog inside the dumpster within the Hidden Valley Apartments Complex off of 8 Mile Road. It was whimpering and starving Wednesday morning.

Someone tied the dog inside a pillow case and placed it into a large back and toss him in a dumpster.

The dog was taken to the get checked out by a vet and will be cared for by the Almost Home shelter in Southfield. It is a 6-month-old, Chinese Crested mix.

“Very, very sad because he was in such bad shape.” Said Lisa McVeigh from Almost Home.  “He was basically sentenced to die.”

The workers caring for the dog have named it Sprout.  Sprout is emaciated and despite the neglect, he is a lover.

“Skin and bones he was like a walking skeleton not making any noise barely and movement.  We picked him up in our arms and he started kissing out face,” said McVeigh.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the dog is asked to contact investigators.

Donations are needed to help with Sprout’s recovery.

If you are interested in making a donation go to www.AlmostHomeAnimals.org   and click the “help link” followed by the “donate” link.

He should be ready for adoption within two weeks.

You can also apply to adopt Sprout on the Almost Home website.
