Troy Mayor Janice Daniels faces calls for her resignation following post on Facebook

TROY, Mich. (WXYZ) - Troy Mayor Janice Daniels apologized for a controversial Facebook post but has no plans to resign. At Monday night's council meeting Daniels faced a barrage of criticism from constituents over her comments. Many in the crowd called on her to step down.

"I regret having said it," Daniels told Action News. "It was inappropriate language that I used to describe a group of people, although I do believe that marriage is between one man and one woman. It was just an inappropriate remark and I apologize for it."

Daniels won the election just four weeks ago and now has been besieged by calls to resign from her post. But the mayor says she has no plans to do that, despite protests by phone and online.

"I'm hoping because I'm expressing my regret, that people will accept that I'm human," Daniels said. "And that's what I'm asking for is forgiveness."

Protests took place outside Troy City Hall and Daniels faced a lot of tough criticism at Monday night's city council meeting.

Daniels says she only has one gay friend that she knows of, and will consider reaching out to gay and lesbian groups.

"I have listened to all the comments that have been made, both from my supporters and from the people who were upset with me, and I think that as a result of having listened to all of the comments I will be even a better mayor in the future," said Daniels.

Daniels says she does not think her comments will deter businesses from coming to Troy. In fact she says businesses want to come to Troy because she is mayor.

Daniels would not go into details on her thoughts of gay rights.

"I think as the mayor of Troy my personal opinions aren't really of the issue," Daniels says. "I don't think it's an issue the mayor of Troy needs to address."

Her personal Facebook page has been deactivated.

As for that 'I love New York' bag, Daniels still has it.
