NOVI, Mich. (WXYZ) - Novi Police say a man killed his wife and two children in the bedrooms of their home before apparently committing suicide inside his SUV in a Wal-Mart parking lot.
Police say a family friend called after the kids did not show up at school Friday and their mother missed an appointment. Officers went to the house on Applebrooke Drive, near Nine Mile and Napier Roads for a welfare check.
Inside they found three bodies; two boys and a woman. Police say they were all found dead in their own beds.
Jennifer Schons died of multiple stab wounds. Her sons, six year-old Tynan and four year-old Camden, were choked to death. The official cause is listed in the report as "asphyxiation and neck compressions."
The father who allegedly killed his wife and sons, Mark Schons, committed suicide. Police say he died of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Two hours after finding the boys and their mother Friday, Oakland County Sheriff's Deputies located the Mark Schons' vehicle near Milford Road and I-96 in South Lyon. Deputies went to check out the vehicle where they found a man inside who had apparently committed suicide.
Action News has learned the boys attended Thornton Creek Elementary School in Northville. One of the boys was in pre-school. The other boy was a first grader at the school. The superintendent tells Action News a crisis team will be on hand Monday to help students cope with this tragedy. Officers will also be provided with grief counselors.
The Novi Police Department has received information from family members and friends suggesting the couple, Mark and Jennifer Schons, were considering a divorce. Information and witnesses suggested they both were still living in the home together. Action News Investigators have also learned they filed for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy in December.
The victims are:
38-year old Jennifer Schons
6-year-old Tynan Schons
