PORT HURON, Mich. (WXYZ) - Mara Skinner testified that she suffered 26 entry wounds when attacked with a knife along with her husband, Paul, in their bed shortly after midnight on November 12th.
During a preliminary examination in 72nd District Court, the 44-year old junior high school teacher described the horrifying ordeal in graphic detail.
Skinner said she couldn’t see her attacker in the dark but felt repeated strikes to her body as she fought for her life.
Paul Skinner wrestled with a second attacker and was stabbed numerous times as well. He managed to chase the attackers out of the family’s house in Yale, Michigan but died of his injuries a short time later.
Skinner’s 17-year old adopted daughter, Tia, and 18 year-olds Jonathan Kurtz and Robert Preston, are charged with open murder, attempted murder, and conspiracy to commit murder. Judge John D. Monaghan ordered all three bound over for trial.
In her testimony, Skinner acknowledged her disapproval of the relationship that had recently developed between her daughter and Kurtz. Michigan State Police Sgt. Detective Twana Powell testified that Kurtz and Preston told her that Skinner recruited them to kill the couple for $1,000, with each to receive half the money.
A hand-written map showing the neighborhood and an interior floor-plan of the Skinner’s home was found outside by police. Kurtz and Preston told police Tia Skinner drew the map. Two knives that may have been used in the attack were also found inside the Skinner home. Prosecutors are still awaiting lab results as well as the autopsy report on Paul Skinner.
