ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WXYZ) - HAZMAT is on the scene of a semi rollover leaking acid on M-14 just before southbound US-23.
Acid is leaking from the semi flatbed truck which was carrying a train car filled with benzene dicarboxylic acid.
Southbound US-23 to westbound M-14 is down to one lane. M-14 westbound is still closed and traffic is being routed northbound on US-23.
M-14 is expected to be closed until at least 8 p.m.
Traffic is backed up for miles and police are asking drivers to avoid the area.
Sand trucks are being used to absorb the material at this time. Benzene dicarboxylic acid does not pose a risk to residents in the area. It is used in the manufacture of food and beverage plastics, dyes, perfumes and medicines.
The driver of the truck was injured and transported to U of M hospital.
Ann Arbor Township Fire Department, Washtenaw County HAZMAT, MSP and Huron Valley Ambulance are on the scene.
The freeway is expected to be shut down for hours.
