YPSILANTI, Mich. (WXYZ) - Eastern Michigan University will play host to former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick as part of a speech he’s giving to a student group.
The organization responsible for luring the mayor back to metro Detroit is called Black Leaders Aspiring for Critical Knowledge, also known as “B.L.A.C.K.”
According to university officials B.L.A.C.K. is handling the mayor’s visit – EMU is not paying Kilpatrick any money, or financing the trip in any way.
The speech will take place on November 29 inside the student ballroom. The theme is redemption or second chances. We’re told the event will be open to the student body, not just members of B.L.A.C.K.
A university spokesman tells 7 Action News they support the right of student groups to bring in speakers, even if they are controversial. Administrators would only step in if a speaker advocates violence or promotes a message of hate.
