DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. (WXYZ) - Police have released new details in a deadly crash that killed three people and shut down Telegraph road between Warren and Ford Road for hours on Friday.
Officers say Daemon Maniaci was driving westbound on Ford Road in a black Ford Ranger at the time of the accident. Maniaci is reported to have been fleeing the scene of another accident in Dearborn.
Alycia Sneed witnessed it all. She says Maniaci was speeding west on Ford Road, running red lights-- and she slowed up because she "knew when he got to Telegraph, he wasn't going to make it".
At the time of the crash the light at the intersection of Ford Road and Telegraph was red for Ford Road and green for Telegraph.
Police say Maniaci blew through the red light intersection, slamming into a northbound green Honda Accord that was being driven by 19-year-old Adnan Berisha of Dearborn Heights. The Ranger hit the Accord in the passenger door.
Eighteen-year-old Markel Jackson-Willis and 21-year-old William Willis were riding in the car at the time of the accident. Jackson-Willis was riding in the front passenger seat and was killed.
Willis was riding in the back seat. He was extricated from the car and taken to the hospital where he was listed in critical condition. Fire department officials who were involved said they had to use the "jaws of life" to extricate him from the Honda.
"This is probably the worst I've seen," said a veteran police officer describing the scene.
"I can't believe it, I don't want to believe it," said Ronato Ibrahim, Berisha's best friend, who he considers more of a brother than a friend.
"He was a wonderful guy, he illuminated a room," Ibrahim said of Berisha.
Maniaci was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. He was the only person in the truck.
Dearborn Police say there were no injuries in the hit and run crash that occurred moments before the deadly wreck.
7 Action News has learned Maniaci had a long history of driving offenses. Since 2006, he 48-year-old from Westland has five speeding violations on his record; a violation for driving without due care causing an injury accident and disobeying a traffic signal.
The fatal accident in Dearborn Heights has caused so much heartbreak and grief for the families of the young men as well as the family of the driver.
Friends of Adnan and Markel held a vigil Saturday night at Annapolis High School where they went to school together before Adnan graduated and Markel transferred to another high school in Southgate.
William is still recovering in the hospital. "He is doing much better. Of course he has a long road ahead of himself. But he's keeping it together considering what he has to deal with both physically and mentally. He's a miracle and we love him and we're holding him up in prayer as well," said Flynn Williams, Markel's cousin.
The high school had a wrestling tournament Saturday and decided to play in honor of their former teammate Adnan. They won second place just for him said their coach.
Adnan's funeral is Sunday at noon at the Albanian Islamic Center in Harper Woods. He will be laid to rest at a cemetery in Canton. Funeral arrangements for Markel are still being made.
Both families need help paying for the funerals. A family friend tells 7 Action News that Annapolis High School agreed take donations and disperse them to the family.
