DEARBORN, Mich., (WXYZ) - Arab Americans celebrated in Dearborn after news spread that Osama bin Laden had been killed in a fire fight with US armed forces in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
The celebration took place on the steps of Dearborn City Hall. The city is home to one of the largest Arab American populations outside of the Middle East.
The Dearborn celebration of about two dozen people was captured on video and posted to YouTube overnight.
Jaafar Fakhrulddin, who works in Dearborn, is from Iraq and tells Action News, "I received a text from a friend of mine who is in the military, the US Army. He told me and I was very happy. Finally, they got this guy. You know he's the biggest enemy of the United States and he was behind all these terrorist attacks all over the world and in the United States. So, I'm really happy that this devil is gone now."
The Executive Director of the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI), Dawud Walid, said, "We welcome the announcement that Osama bin Laden has been eliminated as a threat to our nation and the world through the actions of our military personnel. In addition, to the killing of thousands of Americans, he and Al Qaeda caused the deaths of countless Muslims worldwide. We also welcome President Obama's clear statement tonight that the United States is not at war with Islam."
