WARREN, Mich. (WXYZ) - Students at Lincoln High School got a special treat when famous rapper, Big Sean, spent the day at the school.
He went from classroom to classroom speaking to students about the importance of staying in school.
He told the teens when he attended Cass Technical High School he graduated with a 3.7 grade point average and was offered a scholarship to Michigan State University.
Lincoln High School won the Get Schooled Detroit Challenge by improving its attendance by nearly 9 percent. The challenge was put on by General Motors, United Way, and Viacom.
Since Lincoln High School was the winner, Big Sean became their principal for the day.
“This is about as connected as you could ever get with the students. Someone they respect and he gave a great message here,” said Mark Reuss, president of General Motors North America.
Big Sean is a hip hop artists signed to Kanye West’s record label Good Music.
An assembly took place at the school around noon. It was emceed by MTV host V.J. Sway and WJLB’s Coco.
Rapper Royce Da 5'9 from Eminem’s record label, Shady Records, stopped by to talk to students. He also performed his verse on the Bruno Mars’ hit song Sky Full of Lighters.
Big Sean told 7 Action News he had performed at a concert the night before and got on a plane with little sleep because the message to the students was very important.
“One of my New Year’s resolutions was to be more involved. Especially with education,” said Big Sean. “So this was the perfect way to get involved with the school and it’s tight to see the kids so excited.”
