Children learn about K2, water safety and food safety

LIVONIA. Mich. (WXYZ) - Livonia police took a break from patrolling the streets to do something just as important. They taught hundreds of children how to stay safe during the annual "Passport to Safety" event.

The big draw was the free bicycle helmet giveaway, but there was lots to learn. Nine different stations taught them everything from water safety to food safety to the dangers of K-2 and synthetic marijuana.

"One of the roughest things we handle is when a child gets hurt by an accident," said
Sgt. Patrick Moug. "We see these things, and this is our chance to prevent this. If we prevent a couple kids a year from getting hurt, then this is money and effort well spent."

The fair is targeted at kids under the age of 8, so topics like synthetic marijuana might seem a little mature for them, but officers say it also helps inform parents about what’s out there.
